Worker’s movements highlighted in the 3rd Cycle of Conferences of the Textile Industry Museum
11-10-2021
Under the theme "Journeys and memories: Industry and workers in the 19th - 20th centuries", the 3rd Cycle of Conferences of the Ave Basin Textile Industry Museum (MITBA) takes place during the last quarter of 2021, with three sessions, divided into October 16, November 13 and December 11. Each one of them takes place on Saturday afternoon, from 15h00, at MITBA, and includes a guided tour to a famalicense museum unit at the end of the conference.
With the intention of presenting some of the most significant aspects of the workers' movements that took place in the Ave Basin in those centuries, among the subjects approached will be presented reflections on the workers' struggles, the question of women's work in the textile industry and the first great workers' strike in the region.
The conference cycle begins with Paula Ramos Nogueira, from the Physics Centre of Coimbra University, exploring the theme "Factory Women - Notes on the feminization of the textile industry in Guimarães", on 16th October, which includes, at the end, a visit to the Automobile Museum, in Ribeirão. The speaker will not be present, therefore the presentation will happen through pre-recorded video.
The second session, on the 13th November, will be entitled "The Struggles of the Braga workers during the First Republic (1910-1926)", and will be attended by Débora Duarte Val Escadas, PhD student at the University of Minho. This time, the visit will be to the Núcleo de Lousado of the National Railway Museum.
The third and last conference continues the studies of workers' struggles, with "The struggles of the textile workers of the Ave Basin, 1956 -1974", a theme that will be explored by José Manuel Lopes Cordeiro, Scientific Coordinator of MITBA and professor at the University of Minho. The last visit of the cycle will be to the host museum of the Conference Cycle.
Please note that the sessions are open to the public, requiring prior registration, free of charge, by clicking here. The Scientific and Pedagogical Council accredit this event for Continuous Training, as a 10-hour training course for teachers.
