An unprecedented concert in the Town Hall, inspired by the intervention songs that marked the 1974 revolution, is the highlight of the cultural programme for the 25th April celebrations in Vila Nova de Famalicão.
The unique show, performed by the Eixo do Jazz Ensemble, is scheduled for the afternoon (16h00) of the 25th and has free admission. The cultural moment will feature musical arrangements by one of the great names of Portuguese jazz, António Pedro Neves, and will be 'illustrated' with the projection of images of the April Revolution in Famalicão and in the country.
On 25 April, the celebrations will also be marked by the traditional raising of the national flag at the Town Hall, at 10h00, to the sound of the national anthem played by the Famalicão Music Band, followed by a performance of the theme "Somos Livres" (We are free) by a hundred seniors from the municipality's Senior Academies, and the formal session in the noble hall of the Municipal Assembly, at 10h30.
Famalicão is celebrating the 50th anniversary of 25 April with a rich and diverse cultural programme that kicked off last November with a colloquium and the opening of Alfredo Cunha's photographic exhibition - "25 April 1974. Thursday" - on display at Famalicão's Municipal Market Square until May 30.
On 20 April, Famalicão's Casa das Artes hosts the concert "Mário Laginha and Pedro Burmester Celebrate Freedom".
Also noteworthy are the musical-theatre show "Versos e Sons de Abril" at the Bernardino Machado Museum (April 24), and the opening of the exhibition "Portugal 1974: the beginning of a new era" at the National Railway Museum in Lousado (6 April), for the screening of the films "March on Rome" (April 16), "48" (April 17) and "A Dancing Body - Gulbenkian Ballet 1965-2005" (April 18) at Casa das Artes, and "Outro País" (April 27), at the Narciso Ferreira Theatre in Riba de Ave, as well as the commented walks "Route of Freedom" through Vila Nova de Famalicão and Riba de Ave (April 20 and 27), among other initiatives that can be consulted on the municipal agenda.
It should also be noted that, until the end of the year, the municipality is planting 49 'Freedom Trees' in the 49 parish communities.
The municipal programme associated with the 50th anniversary of 25 April is being developed by the Famalicão Municipality, through the Honour and Scientific Committee of the municipal celebrations, in conjunction with the national committee.
