Weighing over 551 pounds, Charlie suffers from morbid obesity and has refused to leave the house for several years. An English teacher at an online university, he teaches his classes with his camera off to avoid revealing his appearance. The only person he regularly meets is Liz (Hong Chau), his nurse and only friend, who provides him with basic care. Although he has learned to cope with loneliness, there is something that consumes Charlie more than anything else: the guilt of not having accompanied the growth of his daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink, the charismatic Max from "Stranger Things"), after having abandoned his marriage to Mary (Samantha Morton) to live a great love. But now, determined to win the affection of his daughter, who is going through a particularly delicate time in her life, he finally feels able to face his demons. Brendan Fraser's performance won him a Critics' Choice Award and he was nominated for a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA and Oscar for Best Actor.
