Mr Asai lives in Nara with his three daughters: the eldest, Chizuru, who has returned to the family home after her husband's death; the middle one, Ayako, who is of marriageable age but in no hurry to leave her parents; and the youngest, Setsuko, the most exuberant of the three sisters who dreams of moving to the capital. The latter is very close to Shôji, Chizuru's young brother-in-law who lives in a temple close to the Asai family. One day, he is visited by an old friend, Amamiya, who tells him about Ayako. Setsuko is convinced that Shôji still has feelings for his sister and will do anything to force fate.
