During the Second World War, teenager Mahito, haunted by the tragic death of his mother, is relocated from Tokyo to the serene rural home of his stepmother Natsuko, a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the boy's mother. As he tries to adjust, his strange new surroundings are made even more unusual by the appearance of a persistent grey heron, who confuses and torments Mahito by calling him "the long-awaited one".
