With the building of the Camilo Castelo Branco Municipal Library of Famalicão closed due to the already announced re-qualification and expansion works, the City Council decided to resume some of the services and activities of the library, in the provisional and temporary facilities created for that purpose in the Famalicão Parish House, better known as the Famalicão Civic Centre.
Here, a room is made available to the readers for consultation and reading of a representative part of the works referring, exclusively, to Portuguese and foreign literature, for adults and children, having as main objective the maintenance of the home loan service.
In the same space, the periodicals section continues to function, where newspapers and magazines are still available for consultation, as well as two public posts for Internet access. This new space is available to the public from Monday to Friday, between 10h00 and 19h30.
On the other hand, in the Municipal Archives Alberto Sampaio and sharing the consultation room of that municipal service, it will also be possible to keep the Local Fund section open to the public. This is a specialized section where various types of documentation and publications regarding the history and memory of the municipality are gathered, whose main objective is to continue to make available and support consultation, research and investigation on various themes of our local history. This section is available to the public from Monday to Thursday, from 9.30am to 1pm and from 2pm to 5.30pm, and on Fridays between 9.30am and 11.30am.
The construction work awarded to the company Costeira - Engenharia e Construção SA for 1.6 million euros has a one-year execution deadline. With the works, the Municipal Library will gain new spaces, with the creation of a room for Audio-visuals, an informal reading room for group study, a new area to house the collection of Eduardo Prado Coelho and the enlargement of the reading room and other services. The enlargement works will be carried out through the construction of an extension of the building in the Sinçães Park, towards the Casa das Artes, with connections for circulation in glass treated from the acoustic and thermal point of view.
Besides the extension works, the whole building, which is almost 30 years old, will be remodelled, modernised and adapted to new technological demands.
Seeking to adapt the building to the current needs of the public, the reception on the first floor will be enhanced, the location of the local fund will be reviewed, the adult reading room will be enlarged and new spaces will be created for reading audio-visuals, book deposits, a cafeteria and a garage for the bibliomobile, among other improvements.
