"Surfaces" is the name of the most recent exhibition at the Ala da Frente municipal gallery, by Pedro Chorão. The work of the renowned artist can be seen until May 18 at the Famalicense cultural space. The admission is free.
Those entering the municipal gallery will find a selection of paintings and photographic works by Pedro Chorão, realised under a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1987/88/89, in the Alentejo Region, "works that are the result of a very meticulous and attentive journey where every detail, every fragment, every detail of light, every texture became the focus of attention and resulted in a photograph. These images have a lucid composition and a differentiated perception," as the curator of the contemporary art gallery, António Gonçalves, says in the presentation text.
According to the curator of the Famalicense gallery, Pedro Chorão "has developed a wide-ranging body of work with a very refined sensibility that results in works with a careful aesthetic sense and refined wisdom", something that is now reflected in "Surfaces".
Pedro Chorão was born in Coimbra in 1945, studied in Liverpool and Paris and gained a master's degree in painting from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. Since 1972, the artist has held more than 150 exhibitions, in Portugal and abroad, and his CV includes national awards (III Exhibition of Fine Arts, Gulbenkian Foundation, 1987; Bicentenary of the Ministry of Finance, 1988; Lagos Biennial, 1990) and international awards (AICA - Association Internationalle des Critiques d'Art). The Conimbricense artist's work is represented in the main national collections and museums in Lisbon and Porto.
Pedro Chorão's "Surfaces" exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, from 10am to 5.30pm, and at weekends, from 2.30pm to 5.30pm, at the Ala da Frente municipal gallery, located in the Bernardino Machado Museum building in Famalicão.
