The City Council of Vila Nova de Famalicão received, for the fifth consecutive year, the Green Flag ECOXXI award. The award ceremony took place last September 22, at the Santo Thyrso Factory, in Santo Tirso, and the town councillor for the environment, Pedro Sena, received the flag.
In the set of 21 sustainability indicators used to measure the performance of each candidate county, regarding environmental education and education for sustainability, Famalicão achieved an index higher than 70%, which resulted in an improvement compared to the 67% obtained in 2020.
The county of Famalicão exceeded its classification in indicators such as "Citizenship, Governance and Participation", "Safe Water and Quality of Water Services Provided to Users" and "Sustainable Mobility", in relation to the previous year.
It should be noted that the ECOXXI programme is coordinated by the European Blue Flag Association (ABAE), and aims to recognise the work developed by municipalities regarding environmental education and education for sustainability, based on the principles of "Local Agenda 21", created by the Portuguese Environment Agency.
