The Animal Welfare is one of the areas of municipal intervention "where the municipal mandate is fulfilled with overcoming". It was with a feeling of pride and work done that the Mayor of Famalicão, Paulo Cunha, marked, this Monday, the opening of the new Official Animal Gathering Centre, a tool at the service of the municipal policy for the protection of animals.
The new space is established as an animal protection centre, different from the existing kennels, which is not limited to the physical building, but follows a whole dynamic of awareness, reception, responsibility and dedication to animals.
"It is clear that we cannot close in the Official Animal Gathering Centre of Famalicão all the animal protection policies, but it is undeniable that the creation of this structure is a very relevant step for us to be at a high level of these policies. It is one of the areas where the mandate is fulfilled with overcoming, because we can implement measures, we can bring proposals, we can carry out tasks, we can build buildings and create conditions so that, in the future, other actions and other valences can be carried out here", highlighted Paulo Cunha during the visit to the facilities.
Built next to the facilities of the old Municipal Kennel, in an area of about 5500 square meters, the CROA involved a total investment of over half a million euros.
It assumes as a quality equipment that provides the county with a space with conditions for receiving and treating stray animals, ensuring animal safety and welfare. It also allows the development of educational and animal protection actions.
The CROA will be equipped with all the conditions to fulfil its objectives and the legal requirements and obligations inherent to a facility of this nature. Among other features, the space is divided into facilities by species (kennel, cattery and other species), individual and group facilities, quarantine and litter cells, infirmary, warehouses, veterinary office, disinfection area and recreation and physical activity area for dogs and cats.
MORE THAN 30 ANIMALS ARE ADOPTED PER MONTH
The promotion of animal friendly municipal policies is reflected in the behaviour of the community. Paulo Cunha highlighted this, stating, "the involvement of the community has registered a very positive evolution. We have adoption numbers of about 30 animals per month, which is fantastic, which means about one animal per day. It's an excellent number", adding, "people's care for animals is not only measured through adoption - it's also measured in not abandoning, and in the care that should be taken with animals. The act of having an animal at home is an act of great responsibility and the people of Famalicão are very aware of that".
