The educational and cultural programme of the City Council of Vila Nova de Famalicão, "From Famalicão to the World: Contributions of Local History", received an Honourable Mention in the category "Social and Community Cohesion". Awarded by the Direção-Geral das Autarquias Locais (Directorate-General of Local Authorities), the distinction is part of the Local Government Award "Aristides de Sousa Mendes and other Portuguese Saviours - Holocaust, universal values, humanism and justice", a national non-pecuniary honour that takes place annually.
Integrated in the "Never Forget Project - National Programme around the Memory of the Holocaust", it is delivered to the local authorities that, by their own initiative or in articulation with the civil society, promote practices, programmes or projects of high merit and public interest, in five categories: "Social and Community Cohesion", "Arts, Heritage and other Cultural domains", "Shaping the Future on living memories and experiences", "Differentiation, innovation, creativity" and "Making it Happen".
"From Famalicão to the World: Contributions from Local History" is an educational and cultural programme developed by the City Council of Famalicão since 2018/2019 school year, within the scope of the Municipal Educational Strategic Plan. Focused on education for the arts and heritage through the promotion of educational activities to explore the heritage and local history, this programme has already addressed topics such as "Around the Memory of the Holocaust and Humanitarian Aid", "Austrian Children of Caritas Portugal" or "Famalicenses Prisoners in the Concentration Camps", in order to insert local history in an national and universal context.
