According to the Directorate General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV) cited this Thursday by the Jornal de Notícias, Vila Nova de Famalicão is one of the Portuguese municipalities that takes better care for stray animals, occupying a top 10 position in the counties that collects more animals from the street and also one of those that most promotes their adoption.
The information confirms the good work developed through the Animal Collection Centre (CROA) of Vila Nova de Famalicão, a municipal equipment focused on the reception and treatment of stray animals.
For the Mayor, Paulo Cunha, "the protection of animals has been a strategic focus of the City Council that since the beginning of this mandate has dedicated a portfolio to the Defence of Animals and has developed a set of actions in the scope of awareness, reception, responsibility and dedication to animals".
"But the work of animal protection in Famalicão is not limited to the City Council. There is volunteering, civic duty and informal groups, associations and even citizens in this sector with exemplary performance in this matter", adds the mayor.
It should also be referred that the City Council inaugurated, at the beginning of this month of September, the new Centre for Official Animal Collection of Vila Nova de Famalicão, which is installed in an area of about 5500 square meters and involved a total investment of more than half a million euros.
It is assumed as a quality equipment that provides the county with a space with conditions for receiving and treating stray animals, ensuring the safety and welfare of the animals. It also allows the development of educational and animal protection actions.
The CROA will be equipped with all the conditions to fulfil its objectives and the legal requirements and obligations inherent to a facility of this nature. Among other features, the space is divided into facilities by species (kennel, cattery and other species), individual and group facilities, quarantine and litter cells, infirmary, warehouses, veterinary office, disinfection area and recreation and physical activity area for dogs and cats.
