Adriano Pinto Basto Street, from the junction with Daniel Santos Street, and Santo António Street will be closed to car traffic as from 22 July and for an estimated period of 30 days. The closing to traffic of these two central arteries of the city of Famalicão is related to the ongoing intervention of renovation and redevelopment of the Urban Centre.
Under the motto "A New Centre. A New City", the rehabilitation works of the urban centre of Famalicão are taking place as scheduled and should be completed by the end of this year; one year after the contract was awarded.
The works cover the entire urban block located between the squares D. Maria II and Mouzinho de Albuquerque and adjacent streets, providing them with more and better social areas and, simultaneously, more spaces for pedestrians and for soft transport modes, in one of the largest public investments ever in the requalification of a Famalicão city public space. More than eight million euros are being invested in a more people-friendly city, environmentally friendly and close to local commerce.
The intervention will allow the enlargement to the north and to the south of the D. Maria II Square, with the suppression of car traffic on both sides, and the requalification of all the surrounding arteries that will have a single profile of shared circulation, with priority to pedestrians. The Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square, corresponding to the old Feira Field, a much-degraded area of the city, is being completely renovated with the organisation of the parking area and the valorisation of the riverside bank of the River Pelhe.
"By now, the project is mistrusted, the works are upset, but time will prove right for a city designed to be people-friendly. We will have a significant improvement in the quality of life of resident populations, a greater attractiveness of the city in terms of tourism, a better environment, better commerce", says the Mayor, Paulo Cunha.
The work is co-funded by North 2020, through the ERDF - European Regional Development Fund programme.
